To turn CF on and off, I stopped using Setting/Phone/Call Forwarding. Now I have a "Call Forward Home" entry in my address book with the number *21*99999999999# (replacing 9s with my home number) , and "Call Forward Off" number #21# . Both of those are set as favorites, so I can quickly turn on and off the forwarding. Other carriers may use a different code than the 21. Silly that it doesn’t track the state through airplane mode on/off.
