  • iPhone call forwarding indicator

Ever since I started using my iPhone, I wished it had a call forwarding indicator. I typically give out my cell number as my main number when meeting people, and then forward the iPhone to wherever I am. Sometimes, I forget to turn off the forwarding when I leave again, making me unreachable.

To my delight, I discovered that since upgrading the OS to 3.0 my iPhone 3G now indicates when the call forwarding is active with an icon on the status bar.

I haven’t seen this feature announced, so I am not sure if it is part of the overall 3.0 package, or if it is a feature specific to my carrier: Rogers Canada. The screen shot below shows the phone with the indicator on.

    1. Works for me. Unfortunately only for call forwarding on all calls and not for ‘on busy’. One step forward.

    2. If I enable airplane mode, then disable it, the CF icon is not on. I have to go into Settings, Phone, CF. Then the icon comes back. This is nearly as bad as no icon at all.

    3. Silly that it doesn’t track the state through airplane mode on/off.

To turn CF on and off, I stopped using Setting/Phone/Call Forwarding. Now I have a “Call Forward Home” entry in my address book with the number *21*99999999999# (replacing 9s with my home number) , and “Call Forward Off” number #21# . Both of those are set as favorites, so I can quickly turn on and off the forwarding. Other carriers may use a different code than the 21.
